Pyrolysis – Efficient Use of Organic Residuals
Two Key Benefits: Energy Generation and Carbon Storage
Pyrolysis is a thermal process in which organic materials, such as digestate, wood, sewage sludge, or agricultural residues, are heated to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This process converts residual biomass into several valuable outputs:
-
Pyrolysis Gas: a combustible gas that can be used for energy generation
-
Biochar: a solid carbon-rich material that permanently stores carbon and can be used for soil improvement or animal feed additives
-
Pyrolysis Oil (process-dependent): a liquid energy carrier
- Thermal Energy: usable heat for district heating networks or on-site industrial processes
- Carbon Credits: varying credit potential depending on feedstock type and system configuration
Why Is Pyrolysis So Interesting?
CO₂ Sink: Biochar produced through pyrolysis permanently binds carbon from the input material, also known as negative emissions.
Energy Production: The energy generated during the process can be used directly or partially converted into electricity – well suited for on-site energy use and energy self-sufficiency.
Efficient Use of Residual Materials: Materials that would otherwise require disposal are converted into energy carriers and usable products.
Applications with Long-Term Potential: Biochar can be used as soil improvement, animal feed additives, construction materials, and industrial processes.
